Recovering a Legal Firm Website After a WordPress Plugin Hijack and Google Delisting

A popular legal firm website was removed from Google search results after an outdated WordPress plugin was exploited and used to compromise the site. Pyneora identified and removed the vulnerable plugin, updated the active plugin stack, hardened the Nginx and Ubuntu server environment, and supported the Google re-indexing request with evidence of remediation. The site was restored to full search visibility alongside the firm's existing Google Business Profile.

The Challenge

A well-established legal firm experienced a serious website compromise that resulted in the site being removed from Google search listings. The website was important to the firm's public reputation and lead generation, supported by a substantial Google Business Profile presence with a high volume of client reviews and strong search visibility.

The compromise was traced to an outdated WordPress plugin that was no longer actively used and had not been maintained. The plugin was past support and had become a security weakness within the website environment. Poorly maintained WordPress plugins can expose sites to vulnerabilities such as cross-site scripting, cross-site request forgery, unauthorised content injection, redirects, spam content, or other forms of website hijacking.

By the time assistance was requested, the immediate business issue was not only the technical compromise, but the loss of Google indexing and the reputational impact of a legal services website being flagged as unsafe or compromised. The priority was to identify the source of the compromise, remove the vulnerable component, harden the server and website environment, and provide enough evidence for Google to reconsider the site for indexing.

The Approach

  • Investigated the compromised WordPress site to identify the source of the hijack.
  • Traced the issue to an outdated and unsupported plugin that was installed but not actively used.
  • Removed the vulnerable plugin from the WordPress environment.
  • Reviewed and updated the active WordPress plugin stack to reduce exposure to known vulnerabilities.
  • Checked the site for signs of injected content, malicious redirects, suspicious scripts, and unauthorised changes.
  • Performed additional hardening on the Nginx web server configuration.
  • Applied Ubuntu server hardening measures to reduce the risk of repeat compromise.
  • Reviewed the website hosting environment for unnecessary services, weak configuration, and outdated components.
  • Prepared a remediation and hardening summary to support the Google review process.
  • Submitted a request for Google to review and re-index the website once the compromise had been removed and the environment had been secured.
